Fortunately, despite their huge size, rotary kilns aren’t that complicated. There are only a handful of primary components that make a kiln fire.
So, let’s take a look at the major components and how they work together.
The Most Important Parts of a Rotary Kiln
Step 1 -The Kiln Itself
The rotary cylinder is at the heart of the kiln, and where all the heating happens. The shell is typically a straight cylinder, but may also be enlarged at either end, depending on the specific materials being fired and the necessary heat envelope.
The other shell is typically made of hardened steel plates, layered for extra protection. Typically, also extra steel support layers are at the point the shell meets the rollers.
Inside, the kiln is lined with a refractory layer which is usually made of specially fired bricks intended to stand up to high heat. They must be capable of (almost) fully containing and reflecting heat within the kiln, which can easily go higher than 2000F. The outer shell is tough, but if the refractory layer breaks down, the heat can quickly warp the outer shell.
Step 2-The Tire Rings
Every kiln has one or more tire rings that go around the outside of the body and provide a point of contact between the kiln and the thrust rollers below. This reduces stresses on the shell while distributing the massive weight of the kiln as evenly as possible. Should these become deformed, the kiln will not rotate smoothly.
Step 3-The Thrust Rollers
The rotational movement of the kiln is provided by massive rollers mounted below the tire rings. These are the “drive wheels” of the kiln and are powered by massive motors. The motors can run on a variety of fuels, including coal or electricity, giving operators a lot of options in how they run their kiln over time.
Step 4-The Support Rollers
The kiln’s weight and movement are also supported by passive non-powered rollers, which are there to keep everything rolling smoothly. These rollers must be carefully balanced and positioned to support the kiln, but without pinching it or putting undue pressure on it which could deform the shell over time.
Step 5-The transmission device
Finally, the rollers need to get power from the motor, which is typically external to the entire assembly. So, huge gear works are necessary to transmit power from the motor to the thrust rollers. These gears undergo large amounts of stress and are one of the most likely components to fail over time, making watchful maintenance a must for long-term usage.
