A properly made kiln can potentially stay in service for decades, but it won’t run flawlessly for all that time. Individual parts wear out and some, you could say, were designed to fail. Either way, periodically you will need replacement kiln parts to keep your kiln running properly.
Two of the components most commonly replaced are the rotary drum liner, as well as the drum seal.
Let’s take a look at when and why replacements are called for.
I. Rotary Drum Liners
The rotary drum liner is one of the single most important elements of a kiln since it helps trap and redirect the heat inwards. If the liner is worn, torn, or otherwise ineffective, the immense heat within the kiln can damage the rotary drum itself – causing warping or even cracking. In addition, the liner also protects the outer shell from direct impact damage from the debris within.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to predict when or how a drum liner will fail. The longevity of your liner will depend entirely on the kiln’s usage. Often, damage can be seen with a visual inspection. Warping in the drum is another sign of serious problems.
Be aware, replacing the rotary drum liner will require a complete shutdown of the kiln. On the plus side, this is an excellent opportunity to do any other maintenance or install other replacement kiln parts as needed.
II. Rotary Drum Seals
Rotary drum seals go between the rotating drum and the stationary sections, preventing heat leakage. As the seals break down, it becomes more difficult to maintain proper heat profiles within the kiln. It could also lead to damage to the exterior components if enough superheated air is escaping.
If the seal is failing, it can often be seen visually. You may also see material back spill when adding materials to the kiln or hear unusual noises as the drum turns.
Seals will periodically fail, but not too often. If you find yourself needing replacement seals often, that could indicate other problems – such as a misaligned or off-balance rotary drum, putting uneven pressure on the seal. This would be a reason to call in kiln repair specialists to evaluate the kiln.
The Warning Signs
Cracks, tears, and warping in the liners or seals are the most obvious indicators of trouble. These weaknesses compromise the integrity of the drum, allowing heat and materials to escape. Imagine a cracked pot trying to boil water – it’s just not going to be efficient or safe.
Energy Drain
If your kiln is suddenly demanding more energy to reach the same temperature, worn-out liners and seals could be the culprit. Leaky seals are like open windows in the dead of winter – heat escapes easily, forcing the heating elements to work overtime. This not only drives up your energy costs but also puts stress on the heating system, potentially shortening its lifespan. This might be a sign it’s time to look for rotary kilns for sale.
Production Slump or Quality Hit
Uneven heating and temperature fluctuations caused by faulty liners and seals can wreak havoc on your precious creations. Imagine a cake baking in an oven with a broken door – it’s going to come out unevenly cooked. Similarly, inconsistent firing in your kiln can lead to cracks, warping, and overall poor quality in your finished products.
Don’t Let Worn Parts Turn Hazardous
Damaged liners and seals are more than just performance drags, because they can be safety hazards. Leaking seals can expose workers to harmful fumes and heat, while weakened liners pose a risk of structural failure. Imagine a bridge with cracked supports – it’s not something you want to trust with your safety. Don’t wait for an accident – prioritize timely replacements and find rotary kilns for sale.
